Empathy for All in the Bioethics Universe

Bioethics represents the ethics involved with all living things. Empathy means understanding and concern for others. Shouldn't those of us, people, animals and all living together on this single planet have empathy for all? You may find the video presentation of Jeremy Rifkin on YouTube regarding his concept of an empathetic civilization interesting. After all, this is what bioethics, in its fullest sense, is all about. After you have watched the graphic presentation, return and write about what you think of the concept. ..Maurice.

Empathy is key for self-actualization; we aren't the best we can be without being empathic human beings. A lot of people claim to be empathic but are sympathetic instead, closer to feeling pity for or distance from rather than identifying with someone.

People can still have empathy for another person's (patient's, doctor's) point of view even if they disagree. Most people think the Golden Rule means treating someone as you want to be treated--instead, it's treating people as they want to be treated--i.e., as you'd want to be treated if you held that belief or feeling. It's easier to work to consensus or to agree to disagree in a happy way when others are empathetic.

I think the history of medical practice has encouraged detachment and othering. I dcn't understand why some doctors are so empathetic and others can't seem to be at all--even when someone's in distress, there's no word of kindness, only clinical detachment.
