On a Personal Note

UNINVITED GUEST

Oh, Culex, you uninvited guest
Who kissed me, spreading your exotic gift
And leaving me weak, feverish, seeing double
And becoming suddenly a modern statistic.

Oh, Culex, where are you now?
What life are you going to challenge next?
Stay away. I'll be back.
And, you know, Culex, I have never been to Uganda.

Yes, Cindy, Man often wins.. but not always. Unfortunately ethics doesn't seem to be pertinent in the Man vs Bug relationship. ..Maurice.

You're right. Ethics doesn't really apply here. I just meant you personally have triumphed over the virus, as in "You da Man".

I too was a victim of West Nile Virus, in early fall of 2002, in Oklahoma City. I have since developed some slight neurological difficulties, and endured more tests and procedures than I thought existed! (From MRIs x 4 to lumbar punctures to blood tests to 'rule out' everything else). I have been told that in Colorado, where WNV was reported in near epidemic numbers, many people have developed lingering neurological problems of various types. What has been your personal experience? Have you found any correlation? Just curious... and I imagine you were very pleased when the darn fever finally broke. I too was hospitalized in the facility I work in; however I am not a physician so very little confidentiality problems there. However I do know that several people did access my records.

My fever lasted only a few days. Diplopia (double vision) lasted a couple days but I developed during the first week a terribly painful left L-5 radiculopathy which I never had previously and which lasted almost 2 months. It is all gone now.

According to my readings on the subject of West Nile viral meningitis/encephalitis, the neurologic involvement can be variable but can include flaccid ascending paralysis and the duration of illness can be prolonged. It is always medically wise, if symptoms are not resolving, to look for the presence of another disease. ..Maurice.
